Pick a setting, the more closed and cramped the better, gather a diverse group of people, throw in a murder, and present everyone as a possible suspect. Whether you’ve read the book, seen any of the films, or have attended a version of this stage production before, you’re likely familiar with the story. Having previewed the season at TLT with Managing Artistic Director Chris Serface in our “Get to Know a Theatre” feature, I’ve been looking forward to this production, specifically to see how the theatre is utilizing some of its differentiators, specifically its rotating stage and LED display board, to bring this classic to life on the stage. York, costume design by Michele Graves, and sound design by Dylan Twiner. The TLT production, running now through November 6, is directed by Melanie Gladstone, with scenic design by Blake R. Many of Christie’s works have been put up on stage, some written by the author herself (Mousetrap, etc.) and many others adapted, but the fact that so many of her stories have been produced in so many formats proves the popularity of her work through the years. Based on the 1934 novel by Agatha Christie, Murder on the Orient Express has been adapted into multiple formats, including films, radio plays, board games, and this stage production, adapted by Ken Ludwig. Last week I reviewed The Poe Show at Western Washington Center for the Arts, and this week finds me across the Tacoma Narrows Bridge to attend opening night of the Tacoma Little Theatre (TLT) production of Murder on the Orient Express.
